Mentoring Concept
« Back to Glossary Index

The mentoring concept is a widely used human resource development tool, particularly valuable during the onboarding or career development of junior managers and high-potential employees. In this model, an experienced manager—referred to as a mentor—is assigned to a junior employee to serve as a trusted advisor, sounding board, and source of support.

The mentor helps facilitate the mentee’s professional and social integration into the company or a new role. In addition to offering guidance, mentoring can also play a strategic role in personnel planning, such as career development and succession planning. In this context, the mentor may help assess the junior employee’s potential for future responsibilities or leadership positions.

A key principle of the mentoring concept is that the mentor should not be the mentee’s direct supervisor, but rather act as an independent, neutral third party. This structure allows the mentor to mediate between the employee and supervisor when necessary, maintaining objectivity and trust.

Mentoring is especially effective in trainee programs for university graduates, where it helps mitigate or prevent so-called “workplace shock”—the stress and disorientation that can occur when transitioning from academia to a professional environment.

By fostering knowledge transfer, building confidence, and supporting long-term career growth, the mentoring concept has proven to be an essential component of modern talent management strategies.
