Also known as: Partner Part-Time

Job sharing—also referred to as partner part-time—is a flexible working model in which the responsibilities of one full-time position are distributed between two or more employees. This model supports work-life balance and allows organizations to maintain full coverage of a role while offering reduced working hours to individuals.

Job sharing can take several forms:

  • Job pairing: two employees share one position

  • Job tripping: three employees share a role

  • Job sharing pool: multiple employees rotate or share responsibilities in a structured system

Participants in a job sharing arrangement may determine their own schedules—regarding both working hours and location—as long as they stay within the agreed framework. For example:

  • One person works mornings, the other afternoons

  • Each employee alternates full work weeks

  • One works 5 hours per day, while the other works 3

Compensation is prorated according to each employee’s share of the total working hours. The combined total of their part-time hours equals a full-time workload (or a multiple of it, depending on the arrangement).

Job sharing is increasingly used to attract skilled talent seeking more flexible schedules and to support inclusion, diversity, and employee retention.
