Job Performance Requirements/Specification
« Back to Glossary Index

A job performance requirement profile—also referred to as a job specification—visually represents the key qualification requirements expected of an employee in a specific position. It serves as the counterpart to the qualification profile of the position itself.

The development of such a profile typically begins with a requirements analysis, which systematically breaks down a job’s demands into distinct performance criteria. These criteria reflect the skills, abilities, and attributes considered essential for successful job performance.

The significance and weighting of each criterion are then depicted in the job performance profile, providing a visual overview of what is expected from the role. An example of this kind of visualization is illustrated in Figure A-1 (not included here).

However, despite its usefulness, a job performance requirement profile may risk oversimplifying complex role expectations, especially if the analysis is not conducted rigorously. Simplified representations can lead to misinterpretations or inaccurate hiring decisions if used without appropriate context or supporting data.
