Ergonomics
« Back to Glossary Index

Ergonomics is a specialized discipline within work science that focuses on optimizing the interaction between people and their working environments. It is often mistakenly used interchangeably with work science, but in reality, ergonomics is a distinct field dedicated to designing workspaces, methods, and systems that enhance human well-being and performance.

The primary goal of ergonomics is to adapt work and the workplace to the individual, while also helping individuals adapt, within reason, to the demands of their tasks. This dual focus supports both productivity and health.

Core Areas of Ergonomic Analysis and Design

Key elements considered in ergonomics include:

  • The workplace and its layout (e.g., lighting, seating, equipment placement)

  • The work method, or how tasks are carried out

  • The work environment, including noise levels, temperature, and air quality

Ergonomics addresses various sources of workplace stress, particularly:

  • Physical strain (e.g., repetitive motion, poor posture)

  • Psychological stressors (e.g., workload, monotony, unclear expectations)

  • Psycho-physical factors, where physical conditions affect mental performance, and vice versa

By identifying and addressing these factors, ergonomics contributes to the prevention of work-related injuries, enhances comfort, and boosts both productivity and job satisfaction.
