Application Service Providing (ASP)
« Back to Glossary Index

Application Service Providing (ASP) is a service model in which an Internet service provider delivers not only application software (also known as application hosting or application software providing) but also software-related support services, such as user assistance, maintenance, and updates.

In this model, the software is not installed locally on the customer company’s devices. Instead, it is hosted on the provider’s servers and accessed remotely via the Internet, typically through a secure connection. This arrangement allows users to access the software from any location with internet connectivity, providing significant spatial flexibility.

Unlike traditional licensing models, ASP customers do not purchase the software outright. Instead, they typically pay based on usage duration or subscription terms. Software upgrades, new releases, and patches are managed by the ASP provider, often for an additional fee.

ASP is increasingly used for HR application software, such as solutions for recruiting, payroll, or talent management. Many ASP providers also offer HR-related operational services, blurring the lines between Application Service Providing and outsourcing.

ASP solutions are commonly integrated into broader commercial HR portals, giving companies centralized access to digital tools and services for managing their workforce.
