Age Profile / Age Distribution
« Back to Glossary Index

An age profile (also referred to as age distribution) represents the numerical breakdown of a company’s workforce by age group, often visualized as an “age pyramid.”

This demographic segmentation is a valuable tool for workforce analysis and planning. It enables companies to assess their current workforce structure and forecast personnel requirements over time.

Age-related workforce statistics are particularly helpful for:

  • Identifying expected retirements, based on employees approaching statutory retirement age

  • Monitoring and managing the overall age structure within departments and occupational groups

An optimal age distribution ensures a balanced mix of younger and older employees, which supports continuity, knowledge transfer, and long-term cost control. A well-balanced age structure helps organizations maintain stable personnel costs (see personnel costs), minimize recruitment expenses, and reduce the strain caused by sudden talent gaps or mass retirements.

Strategically managing the age profile contributes to organizational resilience, succession planning, and a sustainable talent pipeline.
