At any given moment, we are managing some sort of change. It could be in our personal or professional life. Could be big or small. Might involve other people or maybe just something we want to do for ourselves. You get the point. Change happens all the time.
And change isn’t bad. Sometimes the changes we’re working through are good things that we want. But it’s still change and we still have to work through it.
One of the things that I find helpful is to occasionally review change management models. It can help me walk through the change process and not miss a step. I think there are times when we might rush through change and forget to enjoy the process. Some of you might be saying, “…enjoy the process?!”. Yes, enjoy the process and celebrate success in making change happen. Here are a few change management articles that might be helpful.
Change Management: Pause to Reflect Before Taking the First Step
Change is hard. Even when we’re dealing with changes that we want, change can be hard. Especially the first step of recognizing the need for change. Whether it’s looking for a new opportunity or adopting a new habit, taking that first step can be daunting.
INTERVIEW: Dr. John Kotter on Creating Organizational Change
One of the most challenging aspects about change is knowing that you want to create change and not knowing how to do it. It’s not easy. But I do know one thing, change gets easier when you create buy-in.
How to Use Force Field Analysis for Better Decision Making
One of the first steps in creating change is making the decision to change. Decision making is an important skill. When we make bad decisions, they could weigh on us for a long time. Having good decision-making tools can help us ask the right questions so we make the best decisions possible.
Organizations Don’t Change Until People Do
At times, dealing with change can sound so simple. But it’s really not. Organizations should find a change management model that works for them and train employees how to use it. Because change isn’t going away anytime soon.
Change Management Thrives When We Take Time to Stop
While change will always be a part of our lives, we don’t have to always be in a constant state of change. Or at least not be in a constant state of major change. As individuals, having a few moments to stop, breathe, and celebrate our success can be exactly the motivation we need to tackle the next big change coming our way.
Today’s article isn’t intended to minimize the emotional aspect of change. In fact, my goal was to highlight the models and processes that can help us manage the emotional aspect. Sometimes having that road map to manage the process can allow us to deal with all the emotions that come along the way.
Being able to manage change well isn’t just about attending one seminar or reading a book. It’s about continuously being a student of change – learning new models and discovering what works well. Also recognizing that what worked well for us years ago, might not work as well today.
Change is continuous and we need to be prepared to regularly explore what it can offer us.
